National Geographic Explorer & photographer Arati Kumar-Rao, Bengaluru-based rapper Pasha Bhai, theatre-maker Kirtana Kumar and more contribute to Issue #4 of LURU’s print mag, themed Nature_Nurture.
Our fourth issue goes deep into the green, in a reckoning with our city’s relationship with nature.
From the secret lives of our parks to a Dalit family gathering to mourn a mango tree, this issue traverses through the terrain of the city’s wilderness and reveals another, other-ed Bengaluru, that has been silenced and secluded by dreams of development.
What’s Inside:
An oral history of Cubbon Park: Joshua Muyiwa lets us into a whispered history of Cubbon Park, which years before its gentrification, was the city’s sweet, seedy underbelly.
The environmentalism of a Dalit family: Daniel Sukumar’s lyrical memoir and poetry chronicles his family’s battered relationship with the land they laboured with.
To whom the sky belongs: Acclaimed environmental writer and photographer Arati Kumar-Rao looks up, reminding us that while we carve up the land below, the firmament remains our last truly common ground.
A museum in prose: We’ve partnered with the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) for four lyrical fictions in four languages, inspired by art featured in the exhibition, Beneath the Turning Sky. The series features the voices of Purnima Tammireddy, Dadapeer Jyman, Nadika Nadja, Pasha Bhai, and Preeti Nagaraj.
Plus: Zui Kumar-Reddy’s short story Yahvi about a relationship that crosses uncomfortable boundaries; in Consider the Civet: Science writer Rohini Subrahmanyam untangles the mystery of the Malabar civet — a little carnivore that busies around the forest floor and seems to be having an existential crisis; Kirtana Kumar delivers her all-singing, all-dancing musical theatre rendition of Lalbagh past.
